The infamous Downing Street Christmas party is back in the news after a video was leaked about a former spokesperson joking and making light of it. The video has appeared at the same time as some are suggesting we may need to go back into lockdown to stop the Omicron variant overwhelming the NHS. We asked small business owners around the UK one question:

  • Is it time for Boris to pack his bags?

"The utter contempt this government and Boris has treated the country with is a disgrace. The corruption, lies, misinformation, and, let's be honest, gaslighting that these purveyors of snake oil trot out is on a different level. As the son of an ex-miner living in a former mining area, you can probably guess my views on Mrs Thatcher, but this time I wish she was here to bounce these reprobates straight out of Parliament and into a police cell. She will be turning in her grave."

"At a time when my business, which relies on party bookings, was unable to trade due to Covid restrictions, Downing Street thought it would be OK to have a Christmas party and laugh about it. The disregard this Government continues to show for rules and regulations is unbelievable and I hope this debacle finally brings about some significant consequences for the Conservative Party."

"We need someone to turn to this bunch of reprobates and say, "In the name of God, go!" Where's Oliver Cromwell when you need him?"

"This government is a confederacy of dunces, led by the biggest self-sabotager of all. Boris Johnson has presided over an almost comedic line up of arch villains who have little regard for the public or the public’s perception of them. Should he go? Yes. Will he go? Probably not. How the current cabinet are clinging on to power through scandal after scandal beggars belief."

"The fact that our Prime Minister is a liar should come as no surprise. He has demonstrated throughout his career that making morally questionable choices for the gain of himself or those close to him is a mainstay of his character, but his blatant disregard for the British people on this occasion is too much to accept. Narcissists will always push their own agenda and having one as a prime minister isn’t a healthy dynamic for our nation. Time for Boris Johnson to follow in his father's footsteps and take his place on I’m a Celebrity."
"How many lies is it acceptable for the Prime Minister to tell? Let's face it, the man has told a lot of whoppers. Should he go? Yes. Will he go? No. He's proved time again that he has a bit of a wonky compass when it comes to the truth but the frustrating thing is that huge parts of the electorate still vote for a party that lies on a seemingly daily basis. As long as enough people still lap it up, he'll cling to the job."
"How are we expected to trust somebody who doesn't abide by the rules they lay down and ask others to abide by? I operate in a regulated industry where rules are there to protect people. If I chose to not follow those rules then my business would be shut down. Boris needs to do the decent thing and resign immediately."
"I am pretty sure Boris and his government are made of Teflon! Literally nothing seems to stick and change the public's perception of them. The past few years have been littered with incidents that prove their double standards, hypocrisy and utter disdain for the people of this country, and yet the voters who put Johnson in power will not hear a bad word said about him and his bumbling ways."
"Boris should pack his bags. Fortunately, we are recruiting for some chefs in our stores, so there are plenty of opportunities out there for the lad."
"I'm not convinced an issue such as this should warrant a resignation. However, honestly is definitely the best policy. The public know if they are being misled and will resent this more than The PM admitting the issue and humbly apologising."
"This just proves that the Government doesn't believe in, or abide by, the rules that they are imposing on the rest of us. If these rules are so critical for everyone's safety then surely those in power would follow them? So it shows they are just making up any old rules to be seen to be doing something. Rules which have huge, real world consequences for the economy, people's livelihoods and mental health. If people did things that daft in a regular job, they would probably lose that job."
"You just cannot trust these wallys. Here we are trying to protect the vulnerable, the NHS and our businesses, only to find out we are being made fools of by the privileged. My beauty business missed out on last year's normal bumper month of December due to Christmas parties being cancelled. We are facing the same problem this year with businesses cancelling parties, which has a huge knock-on effect on the hair and beauty sector because if customers' parties are cancelled so are their appointments for the make-over. Time to get a grip on reality Prime Minister."
Yet again Boris and his cronies have proved themselves to be dishonest and contemptible. Is it a resigning issue? Probably not, but when added to the ever growing list of lies and deceit - then yes, the time is right for BoJo to depart No 10 and ideally political and public life. if this guy, or any of his cohorts had a real job, they would have been sacked for gross incompetence many months ago.
"Johnson is like a young, first-time manager that loves the power but has no concept of the responsibility that goes with the role. I can't imagine any business CEO still being in a job after either not telling the truth or being unaware of illegal activity going on in their workplace."
"In any hierarchical organisation people tend to get promoted to their level of incompetence. Never has this been more apparent than with Boris. If the qualities that get you elected are 'likeability', the ability to lie through your teeth, questionable personal morals, waffling and stumbling through your speeches alongside with being completely inept, then I don't think we need to worry about whether Boris stays or not. It's only a matter of time before Porky Pig tries to make a run for leadership."
